“The Dancing Letters” - Moving to the Aleph Beit (NL/EN)

“The Dancing Letters” is a movement practice based on the Hebrew alphabet. With these movements, that have their origin in Tai Chi, we form words and prayers from the Jewish tradition. This is called ‘Embodying prayer’. Hebrew letters are not just letters. The Hebrew word for letter is “Ot”, which means sign, wonder or omen. Each letter is indeed a small wonder. According to the Kabbalah there is a world of meanings behind each letter. During this workshop you will learn more about the deeper meaning of the letters. If you cannot read Hebrew, this is a playful way to learn the letters. If you do know Hebrew, you will experience the prayers in a completely new way. The movements are simple and slow, so everyone can do it. We will dance two or three short prayers that can be used for daily practice. Judaism has a musical language of prayer, developed over hundreds of years, that enriches and transforms Hebrew prayer. When you know this language, called nusach, you can tell with your musical ear what time of day or what time of the week it is (Shabbat or weekday), and whether it is a holiday. Ancient musical modes, related to modes from the Balkans, Middle East and Greece, form the backbone of our improvisational melodic language of prayer. We will look at and listen to modes for weekdays and Shabbat, as well as familiar nusach from the Days of Awe and Festivals. Open your ears to the language of nusach!

Zing een nign, stamp een freylekhs en loop een khosidl. Natuurlijk laten we ook een paar prachtige oude opnames horen en vertellen we je over de noodzakelijke rol van klezmer in de Joodse cultuur. En aangezien deze workshop door meerdere musici van The Klezmer Society wordt gegeven, wordt je getrakteerd op live muziekfragmenten en op een miniconcert!

The necessity to decolonize Jewishness (EN)

A central part of what is considered politically hegemonic results from civilizatory and colonial projects outside Europe. In this context, the figure of the Jew has an ambivalent position. On the one hand, it is a central figure of the so-called Judeo-Christian civilization. On the other hand, the Jews are more often appearing as the victims of this project than its perpetrators hence making the notion of Judeo-Christianity the fruit of antisemitism. I will argue that Memmi, Boyarin and Slabodsky present an interesting approach to this dilemma while exploring the way Jewish identity could serve as a counter-hegemonic political position. I will construct this thesis by investigating several contemporary cases where Jewishness is entangled with Judeo-Christianity. The argument resists but does not oppose the idea that one finds a shift in Jewish positionality within modernity as a Judeo-Christian project: it accepts the shift and recognizes the new position that Jewishness plays but it resists the conclusions that are often drawn from this situation. The argument here will employ the thesis that diasporic Jewishness should be viewed as a form of colonial identity and hence be the object of decolonization. I will show that if integration into hegemony was expected to grant the colonized a new status, the argument will maintain that this is not the case for Jewishness as the issues (i.e., antisemitism) persist despite a reasonably successful integration. In this sense, the thesis here will show that the decolonization of Jewishness remains necessary.

Jews in search of Jewishness (EN)

This talk explores how Jewishness is understood, practiced and experienced by young secular Dutch Jews. We will uncover what Jewishness entails for people who have no formal religious structure to hold onto. Can we put a name to the undefinable, ungraspable qualities that make us Jewish? How do young secular Jews shape and define their Jewish life, often taking unconventional roads, with many twists and turns. How do they continue Jewish traditions, and how do they push the boundaries of what Jewishness can be?
Based on anthropological interviews with young Jews in the Netherlands, we will explore all these questions and more.

Het Joodse hart van een typisch Amsterdamse industrie (NL)

Weinig mensen kennen de Nieuwe Achtergracht. Toch vormde deze straat gedurende ruim 150 jaar (1845-1996) het hart van de wereldberoemde Amsterdamse diamantindustrie. Nog altijd zijn daar vier voormalige slijperijen te vinden, evenals het hoofdkantoor van de Handwerkers Vriendenkring. Deze belangenvereniging representeert de goed georganiseerde diamantbewerkers, die later de machtige diamantbewerkersbond ANDB hebben opgericht. Als tegenhanger geldt de monumentale Diamantbeurs als bolwerk van de handelaren, eveneens aan de Nieuwe Achtergracht. Een tweede diamantbeurs, Concordia, stond daar recht tegenover. Het heeft in de jaren ‘30 plaats gemaakt voor het ‘Paleis van Weldadigheid’, een moderne verzorgingshuis van de Joodse Invalide. Ook het statige Amstel Hotel, de Amsterdamsche Bank en het verdwenen Weesperpoortstation speelden een belangrijke rol in het verdwenen hart van de Amsterdamse diamantindustrie. In deze lezing wordt de sterke samenhang van gebouwen in relatie tot het diamantvak en de Joodse gemeenschap zichtbaar gemaakt.

Two and a half thousand years of navigation on the Dead Sea (EN)

Except for a small boat for touristic cruises, no ships are sailing the Dead Sea today. However, the lake was extensively navigated in the past. In this talk, I will explore the history of navigation on the Dead Sea, starting with the remains of a more than two thousand years old shipyard and anchors from that period, documents from the time of the Bar Kochba revolution and from the crusader period, and the representation of ships on the Madaba mosaic map. I will then discuss the boats used by explorers in the nineteenth century and document the many kinds of ships and other devices that have sailed the lake in the past century, including a World War I bomber plane with floats instead of wings, and even a yellow submarine.

Nederlandse werkers in de Antwerpse diamantindustrie (NL)

De presentatie is een reconstructie van het traject van de Amsterdamse diamantairs die voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog afzakten naar Antwerpen. Concreter gaat het over 22 Nederlandse Joodse gezinnen, waarvan steeds minstens één persoon was ingeschreven in de Antwerpse Diamantbewerkersbond in de jaren 30. Wat is hun profiel, wat zijn hun gemeenschappelijke kenmerken en hoe onderscheidt deze groep zich van de rest van de Antwerpse Joodse gemeenschap? Heeft hun specifieke profiel – of identiteit zo men wil – een invloed gehad op hun lot tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog? In het bijzonder dringt zich deze vraag op: volgen zij het patroon van de Holocaust in Nederland, waar meer dan 70% van de Joodse bevolking werd gedeporteerd, of dat van België, waar slechts 45% werd gedeporteerd? En hoe valt het antwoord daarop te verklaren? We volgen de gezinnen bij hun migratie naar België, hoe ze hun leven leiden in Antwerpen, en wat hen overkomt in de jaren 40. We eindigen met het hoopvolle verhaal van Salomon en Levie Polak, twee broers die Auschwitz overleven.

No partner for peace? A looking at Camp David 2000 (EN)

On October 7, 2000 Prime Minister Ehud Barak declared to the Israeli media, “It appears that there’s no partner for peace.” His declaration was made two months after the failed Camp David summit and a week after the start of the Second Intifada. The Camp David summit, held in the summer of 2000, was meant to bring the Oslo process to a close, create a Palestinian state and bring the Palestinian-Israeli conflict to an end. Instead, its failure led to immense violence, effectively ending the peace process and creating the “no partner” narrative that set the tone for the next 20+ years. Camp David set the stage for how we perceive the peace process today, but if our conclusions are wrong, then could our impressions of the potential for peace also be wrong? This interactive retrospective on the summit will unpack what happened, exploring the assumptions, misconceptions, and misunderstandings of the Israeli, Palestinian and American delegations that led to a series of mistakes, ending in a stalemate that continues to this day. The session will close with a short overview of how Project Didi is attempting to deal with situations like these in an effort to simplify the path to peace.

Tal finds Jewish Europe to be an exquisite tapestry that large Jewish communities can only be envious of in terms of its intricacies and historical wealth. If large Jewish communities are appreciating Jewish European history, scholars and legacy - why are we not? And what can we do to celebrate it more and together.
